RE: 89A Flagstaff to Sedona...

I remember driving that route in a car and thinking "I would hate to have to drive this while towing".

RE: LA Transit Alternatives

I would go 58->395 to bypass the worst of it... That is the way I would go, and I grew up in L.A. Avoid 5-210 into L.A. while towing. I would not recommend that as a tow route to my worst enemy. Top off with fuel before descending into the urban abyss. Then you will not have to exit the freeway and negotiate city traffic to refuel.

RE: The Loneliest Road in Every State in America

I have driven many of those roads. CA Highway 139 is my go-to route to head north. Much nicer drive, scenic, and lots of places to pull over for a dry overnight or just hang out for an hour or so.

RE: Not to do retirement bucket list

Snow. I do not want to mess with snow anymore. So we snowbird every winter. Stay out all night partying. I will leave that for the younger crowd. Drive for 12 hours in the RV to spend one night someplace. I now prefer to drive less per day and take longer to get there. Binge watch TV. We watch the news, and a few favorite shows. Other than that, it is off.

RE: Health rant

"It's not boasting if its true" I was a firefighter for over 30 years. At at 69, I can still pass the physical fitness test: 45 pound pack, 3 miles in 45 minutes; 40 sit-ups in 60 seconds; 25 push-ups in 60 seconds; 7 chin-ups; 1.5 mile run in 10:35. Tests are consecutive with no more than 5 minutes betwen them. I can more than the minimums. *except for the 1.5 mile run. The knees and legs are 69 years old too.

RE: Travel Trailer for Two

Smaller rigs are easier to tow, but how long do you camp? Do you take extended trips in winter? Cooped up in a small trailer during a week long storm is rough on a relationship. Even in our 30' I have been known to don the raingear and take a walk in a downpour just to 'get away' for a while. DW is the light of my life, but 24/7 in a small space...

RE: Black Tank only holds 1/2 to 1/3 of capacity

Like the others noted, the sensors never work right. I will flush and clean the tank, and after about the second flush the sensors all read full again. I can tell how full it is by the smell when I flush. When I detect the tell-tale odor, it's about 3/4 full and time to plan a dump.

RE: Rank your RV issues

When ours was brand new we had recurring leaks in the plumbing. The dealer just kept tightening the connections. I finally made them take the entire joints apart and redo the connections from scratch (way up behind cabinets). That fixed it. Replaced a power converter. Cabinet hardware needs continual retightening or replace the wood screws. That is not a big deal. Checking them is part of the seasonal maintenance. The sewer hose storage in the bumper was not usuable, welded too close to frame members to access the end cap. Added a separate sewer hose carrier under the rig. Replaced a couple running lights. Added a couple exterior area lights. Added several shelves inside. This week moved the cell phone booster to a new location. All in all, no major complaints. We're happy with the rig.

RE: Boondocking near Yellowstone and Grand Teton

I don't think you can camp outside a campground in Yellowstone. Not sure about Grand Teton. Did you look at their websites? They should have camping rules. I know Yellowstone has campgrounds that only allow solid sided trailers, no tents. Did you look for reservations at the campsites within Yellowstone? I'm sure you want to leave your trailer somewhere so you can stop at the sites, it can be hard to get parking if you have a trailer or something that doesn't fit in a conventional parking spot. Pretty sure that is correct. No dispersed camping inside the NP. However, the National Forests surrounding the Park are open to boondocking. You would have to drive in every day, leaving your rig at your campsite.

Not familiar with Living Springs CG. Never stayed there.

RE: Advice on getting to Redwood NP

Live there, near Susanville. Highway 395 Reno to Susanville is good road. No problem in May. Fuel in Susanville is cheaper by about a nickel per gallon at the Diamond Mountain Casino. Main street fuel is higher. No large discount truck stop chains. Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic NP will most likely still be closed in May. Highway 44 around the north side of the Park will be open. Same for Highway 36 south of the Park. Both 36 and 44 are kept open year around. Some of the forest roads off 44 will be iffy in May. Count on no fuel on 44 between Susanville and Redding. There is one gas station in the tiny community of Old Station (population 50). May or may not be open, and has tourist prices. Which campground are you asking about? There is lots of boondocking opportunities in the National Forest around Lassen Volcanic NP. Cell phone coverage can be hit or miss. Mostly miss. Great fly fishing in Hat Creek. Famous for it. From Lassen Park there is basically three routes to get to Redwoods. Highway 36 from Red Bluff to the coast is not recommended for RVs. Narrow, curvy, not RV friendly. Highway 299 from Redding to the coast is good two lane, but very curvy with a couple of steep grades. I have done it, and is not fun but safe. My preferred route is north on I-5, then Highway 199 from Grants Pass Oregon to Crescent City. Much nicer drive, easier with an RV. This takes you right through Jedediah Smith State Park (Star Wars -- Forest Moon of Endor filmed there) and a nice campground right on the river and next to a large grove of Redwoods. May in the Redwoods can still be wet and cool in the mornings. Fog commonly burns off mid to late morning, then can be sunny and pleasant in the afternoon. Inland 5-10 miles gets you out of the fog belt and can get hot in the PM.

RE: Rank your RV issues

Our most recurring problem seems to be propane related. Tank valves, switchover unit, etc. Number two is batteries/converter. Third may be various interior screws, hinges, latches, etc constantly needing adjustment. I am OCD about tires, so those are rarely a problem.

RE: Site squatters

At the crack of dawn the next morning, he was knocking on my door wondering when I was going to be pulling out. Even while I was packing up later he and his entire family were standing there watching me, arms folded. I could understand if buddy came by the day before and said he we would like to move into this spot when you leave, when you're ready can you come down and let us know so we can pull in as you pull out. but to disturb you first thing in the morning. I would have answered the door and said, " you know I was going to leave in a couple house but while trying to have breakfast we decided to stay another week." You and me both!!! Had plans already made. Grandkid stuff. We were not going to inconvenience ourselves to get even with someone. Life is too short to carry that kind of baggage around. We laugh at people like that and do not let them 'push our buttons'.

RE: Site squatters

We were in a National Forest undeveloped site popular with boondockers. Next to a lake. There are several spots where RVs can set up. No services, amenities, or reservations. FCFS. Just a shady grove of pines next to a lake. We were in one spot I thought was particularly nice (three steps out my door and start casting), and the dozen or so other possible campsites were mostly unoccupied, two other campers at the other end. The rest were empty. We had been there three days, when another RV pulled in. He stopped. looked at my camp for several minutes, then got out and walked around the rest of the area. After a few minutes he walked back and came up to me. He asked (politely, I'll give him credit for that) if I would move to another site so he could have have mine. This spot was his favorite and did not really like any of the others. He even offered to help my pack up and move. I was too shocked to answer at first. Then I gathered my thoughts and replied no. I would not move, but I intended to leave the next morning and he could have it then. He grumbled about something I didn't catch, and stormed off, he and his family giving me the evil eye. I guess I was rude by not breaking camp and moving right then. :h At the crack of dawn the next morning, he was knocking on my door wondering when I was going to be pulling out. Even while I was packing up later he and his entire family were standing there watching me, arms folded. DW and I were laughing as we did finally pull out and leave. Life is too short to get angry and ruin my day over people like that.

RE: Not a rant

The best invention is the bluetooth toilet you can flush from your phone app. No need to reach behind you and pull the lever. Is this a great country or what?

RE: Flying J RV discount Card

Install the PFJ+ app on your phone. After you sign up you only need to enter the number the app generates at the pump for the current discount. It's currently 10 cents a gallon for gas for the remainder of the summer, dropping back to 5 cents in the fall. Save 10 cents on every gas gallon Some of the licensed stations do not honor the 0.10 discount, as I found on a recent trip.

RE: Hot weather towing

As the others noted, tire pressures are correct. Check engine coolant. Top it off. The reservoir probably has high/low lines to mark the acceptable levels. May want to make sure the coolant level is in the top half. If you have a transmission temperature gauge, keep an eye on it. Shouldn't be a problem, but the temp could creep up on long climbs.

RE: Incredibly Rude People

Wow!! This just happened to us minutes ago. The people parked behind us just deliberately walked their dogs into our space to defecate. Right next to the steps. Did not stop to clean it up.

RE: Sorta tells it all, don't it.

In the 1960s a car owners manual explained to to adjust points and timing yourself. Now they tell you not to drink the battery acid or antifreeze.
